Resident Rotations
The guide for our curriculum is the Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, June 2001. Each rotation references specific portions of this document relevant to the subject area and includes a list of goals, objectives and reading assignments for mastery of material specific to that rotation.
EM-1 residents begin their program with a month orientation in the emergency department that includes lectures, procedure labs and clinical experience. They then spend 5 additional months in the emergency department, 1 month in the Pediatric ED, 3 months on Hospital Medicine, and 1 month each Orthopedics and Labor & Delivery.
EM-2 residents share responsibilities for all critical care patients and perform major procedures on adult and pediatric codes. EM-2 residents rotate 9 months in the emergency department, 2 months on the ICU rotation, and 1 month in the Pediatric ED..
EM-3 residents run all medical and trauma codes, perform major procedures, and supervise lower level residents and medical students. EM-3 residents gain administrative experience preparing Morbidity & Mortality Conferences, Quality Improvement Conferences and other teaching conferences EM-3 rotate 8 months in the emergency department, 1 month each on ICU, EMS (Air helicopter), Trauma and a one month elective of their choice.
