Research Requirements

All residents of our Emergency Medicine Residency Program will be required to complete a research project during their residency. All research projects must be presented to and approved in advance by the Research Director. When completed, these projects must be submitted to the Research Director in a form suitable for publication, but actual submission for publication is not required.

The Emergency Medicine Faculty will serve as advisors for the projects and assist residents in project design and completion. The subject matter for research projects is flexible. Residents may design a project themselves (along with faculty assistance) or join a faculty member of another resident on a project. Interdisciplinary, multi-resident, prospective projects are encouraged.

Emergency Medicine Resident Research Plan

Year Goals
EM-1 January 1: Submission of formal proposal
EM-2 July 1: Begin data collection and entry of 2 journal club reviews
December 1: Completion of data analysis
June 1: Completion of write-up
EM-3 August 1: Submission to conference/journal

The Research Director will schedule periodic individual meetings to evaluate and provide assistance to each resident so that their research project can be completed in the required time frame.

A conference series is presented to teach research methodologies, encourage and assist the faculty and residents with scholarly activities, and ensure that each resident develops a sound base from which to effectively evaluate the medical literature. Also, Monthly Emergency Medicine Journal Club meetings are held as a forum to review and evaluate currently published research.
