Louisiana State University attracts and enrolls students of all racial, cultural, geographic and economic backgrounds. Of more than 25,000 students, approximately 3,270 represent every state in the nation and more than 1,700 students represent nearly 130 foreign countries. More than 19,000 undergraduate students pursue degrees in 72 major fields in 10 colleges and schools.
Master's degrees are offered in 77 areas and doctoral degrees in 55 fields. The University's more than 1,300 faculty members, some of the world's foremost experts in their respective fields, remain committed to undergraduate teaching and public service.
Many students participate in one or more of the nearly 300 academic, social, religious, honorary, professional, service or Greek organizations, intercollegiate team, and intermural/leisure activities that takes place on LSU's campus. LSU also holds Research University 1 status, a designation shared by only 88 other universities, public and private.
Additionally, LSU is one of only 25 universities nationwide to be designated as both land-grant and sea-grant. LSU's Middleton Library, ranked 46th in size among the top research libraries in the nation, has a convenient, open-shelf arrangement - the main collection being completely accessible.
Assistance is offered through a centralized reference service, a serials desk and a government documents/business administration reference desk. Other features of Middleton Library are listening rooms with an extensive collection of recordings, and a microfilms/newspaper area with approximately one million microfilms.
These are exciting times for Baton Rouge-based graduate medical education programs. The future is bright, with strong partnerships with Louisiana State University of Medicine, Earl K. Long Medical Center, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, private hospitals in the Baton Rouge area and the L.S.U. School of Veterinary Medicine. Baton Rouge General Medical Center, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, and Woman's Hospital have forged alliances with the LSU School of Medicine and Earl K. Long Medical Center to provide great learning experiences for residents training in Baton Rouge.
An ongoing relationship with LSU's main campus, located in Baton Rouge, allows us to draw upon both the basic science expertise there, as well as at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, L.S.U. School of Veterinary Medicine and the Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices. This integration, together with the ongoing clinical research at Earl K. Long Medical Center and other local private hospitals offers challenging new academic opportunities for our training programs.
The Baton Rouge-based graduate medical education programs in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Family Practice enhance the many medical resources found in the Baton Rouge community.
