Competitive salaries for 2007-2008:
EM- 1 $42,757

Medical Malpractice Insurance:
The State of Louisiana provides professional liability coverage for all residents.

Health Insurance:
Residents are eligible to participate in the State employeesí health insurance or managed care plans. Coverage is effective the first day of the month following the completion of one full month of service.

Disability Coverage:
Group long-term disability insurance is provided to residents at no cost.

Deferred Compensation:
Residents are eligible to participate in deferred compensation, a plan for tax-deferred savings and investments. Accumulated contributions plus investment earnings may be withdrawn at termination of service without any tax penalties. Applicable federal and state taxes must be paid on withdrawn funds. The funds may also be left on deposit with the plan and will continue to be invested on a tax-deferred basis.

Dental Insurance:
Residents are eligible to participate in a dental indemnity plan.

Vision Insurance:
Residents are eligible to enroll in a vision plan that provides coverage for an eye exam and one pair of glasses or contact lenses every twelve months.

Life insurance:
Residents are eligible to participate in a life insurance Plan. The basic life coverage is $5,000. Supplemental coverage of one and one-half times annual salary up to a maximum of $50,000 is also available.

Term Life Insurance:
Residents have the option to purchase term life insurance for residents and their eligible dependents. Accidental death and dismemberment coverage is optional and may be purchased with the life policy. Plan is portable, at same premium rate.

Cafeteria Plan:
Residents are eligible to elect pre-tax deductions of certain types of insurance premiums. Participation in the plan lowers taxable income.

Tax Saver Flexible Spending Accounts:
The Tax Saver Flexible Spending Accounts, allows residents to use pretax spending accounts to pay for out-of-pocket health care expenses and dependent care expenses. The deduction(s) are taken before taxes are applied, making the spending account dollars tax-free. As eligible expenses are incurred, participants file a claim form and are reimbursed. Reimbursement checks for eligible expenses are processed weekly. Funds remaining in the account at the end of the plan year are forfeited.

Tax-Sheltered Annuities:
Residents are eligible to participate in this supplemental retirement savings plan, which allows investment of a portion of salary on a tax-sheltered basis. Participation is voluntary and there is no employer contribution on your behalf.

United States Savings Bond
Residents are eligible to participate in a payroll deduction savings plan for the purchase of United States Savings Bonds.

Direct Deposit
Residents may elect to have their check directly deposited into their checking accounts.

Paid Yearly Vacation:

Residents receive 2 weeks of vacation in their EM-1 year, 3 weeks in their EM-2 year and 4 weeks in their EM-3 year.

Sick Leave:
Residents are permitted fourteen (14) days of paid sick leave per year. Sick leave may not be accumulated into subsequent calendar years

Other Leave Benefits:
Maternity, Paternity, Military Leave, Education Leave, Family Leave, or Leave of Absence is available to the residents in accordance with the LSUHSC Leave policies.

Child Care:
Child care is available at facilities located adjacent to the BRGMC at reasonable fees.

Health Club:
Residents are eligible to join the LSU Student Recreational Sports Complex located on LSU campus.

  • Emergency Medicine- A Comprehensive Study Guide (current edition)
  • 12-Lead ECG: The Art of Interpretation
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider Course Manual
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Course Manual
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support Provider Course Manual

Life Support Courses provided to the resident at the beginning of training:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider Course
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor Course
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Course
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Instructor Course
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support Provider Course

Paid Membership Dues:

  • American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)
  • Louisiana Chapter ñ American College of Emergency Physicians (LACEP)
  • Emergency Medicine Residents Association (EMRA)

Educational Stipend:

  • EM-3 residents in good standing will receive an educational stipend of $500

Other Benefits:

  • Lab coats with LSUHSC patches are provided to all residents.
  • Scrubs as provided and laundered by the hospital.
  • On call sleeping quarters are provided
  • Meals are provided by both institutions when on-call
  • Beepers are provided.
  • Internet access and e-mail accounts are provided.
  • Free parking provided at all training facilities and is located in close proximity of each hospital.
